Almond seed bug

The almond seed bug (Oxycarenus amygdali) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Lygaeidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in orchards, primarily affecting stone fruit trees by feeding on both developing fruits and seeds during the growing season.

This species primarily targets almond trees, though it is frequently reported on peaches, apricots, and plums. The adult bugs and their nymphs pierce the fruit skin to suck sap, which inhibits proper development and often leads to premature fruit drop or kernel deformation.

Regarding its biology and lifecycle, the pest overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations such as deep bark crevices, hollows in tree trunks, or under leaf litter. Once the ambient temperature rises in the spring, the insects emerge, migrate to the trees, and initiate the reproductive cycle with multiple generations overlapping throughout the summer.

The economic impact of Oxycarenus amygdali is substantial due to the direct damage to the crop's marketability. Infested almonds often suffer from discolored and shriveled kernels, which become prone to secondary fungal infections during post-harvest storage, leading to major financial losses for growers.
