Description
Oxydia trychiata is a species of moth belonging to the Geometridae family, order Lepidoptera. It is well-documented in agricultural entomology as a significant pest of coffee and cocoa plants, primarily occurring in tropical regions of Central and South America, particularly in Colombia.
The host range is focused on perennial shrubs and trees, with coffee (Coffea arabica) being the most economically affected. The larvae, commonly known as inchworms, are the stage responsible for the primary damage, consuming large quantities of plant biomass during their development.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis consisting of four stages. The adult moths are nocturnal, and females lay clusters of eggs on the foliage. Once hatched, the larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously. Their ability to complete multiple generations within a year allows populations to explode rapidly under favorable weather conditions.
In terms of damage, the larvae cause severe defoliation. Early instars create small holes in the leaves, while late-stage larvae consume entire leaves, leaving only veins. This drastic reduction in photosynthetic surface area stresses the trees, leads to premature fruit drop, and significantly impacts the yield quality and quantity.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Oxydia trychiata. Recommended strategies include:
- Monitoring adult moth activity using light traps or pheromone lures.
- Applying biological agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis or entomopathogenic fungi to target larvae safely.
- Encouraging the presence of natural predators and parasitoids that help maintain the population below the economic threshold.
