Agathis thrips (Oxythrips agathidis) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. It is a specialized pest that primarily infests specific coniferous hosts, notably trees within the Agathis genus. These insects are distinguished by their feeding habits and their adaptation to the foliage of their host plants.

The pest primarily affects young shoots and needles of conifers. In nurseries and plantation settings, this species can become a significant problem by causing physiological stress to young trees. The feeding activity of the thrips leads to reduced vigor, stunted growth, and potential deformities in the development of young plant tissues.

The biology of Oxythrips agathidis follows a typical thrips developmental cycle: egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The duration of the cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity levels. Under optimal conditions, the pest can complete multiple generations in a single growing season, leading to rapid population explosions.

Damage symptoms include silvering or yellowing of the needles, the appearance of necrotic spots, and premature needle drop. The insects use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract cell contents, which destroys the mesophyll tissue. This mechanical damage not only weakens the plant but also creates entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi or bacteria.

Management strategies focus on a combination of monitoring and integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key control methods include:
