Pachynematus ocreatus is an insect species belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This specific sawfly is known as a pest that primarily targets spruce trees (Picea), affecting both forest stands and ornamental nursery stock.
The host range is centered on spruce species, where the larvae feed on the needles. As a defoliator, this pest can cause significant stress to trees if their population reaches high densities, making them more susceptible to secondary infestations and pathogens.
The life cycle involves the overwintering of pupae within the soil or ground litter under the host tree canopy. Adults emerge in spring to lay eggs on the needles. Depending on environmental temperatures, one or two generations may occur within a single year, influencing the timing of damage.
