The sorrel sawfly (Pachynematus rumicis) is an insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This pest is specifically known for targeting species of the genus Rumex. As a specialist herbivore, it primarily impacts vegetable gardens and commercial sorrel fields, causing significant economic damage if left unmanaged.

The host plants for this pest are almost exclusively species of sorrel. The primary damage is inflicted by the larvae, commonly referred to as false caterpillars. While the adult sawflies are relatively harmless, feeding only on nectar or pollen, the rapid growth of the larvae requires substantial consumption of plant leaf tissue.

The life cycle of Pachynematus rumicis follows a pattern typical of many sawflies. They overwinter as mature larvae in cocoons located in the upper layer of the soil. When temperatures rise in the spring, they pupate and emerge as adults. Females deposit eggs into the leaf tissue, ensuring that hatching larvae immediately have access to a food source.
