Spruce striped sawfly

Systematic position. The spruce striped sawfly (Latin: Pachynematus scutellatus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly spruce, known for its ability to cause extensive defoliation in nursery environments and forest plantations.

Host plants. The primary host for this species is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). While it shows a strong preference for spruce species, the larvae can sometimes cause damage to other related conifer species if the population reaches outbreak levels, leading to severe aesthetic and physiological decline in infested trees.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically emerge in the spring, and females lay eggs in the needles of the host plant. Larvae hatch and begin feeding immediately, undergoing several instars before descending to the ground to pupate in the soil or leaf litter, where they typically spend the winter inside a cocoon.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The larvae feed on the needles, often causing partial or complete defoliation of the branches. This loss of foliage significantly reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, leading to stunted growth and weakened defenses against pathogens and wood-boring insects. In severe cases of infestation, repeated defoliation can cause tree mortality.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling the spruce striped sawfly:

• Routine monitoring of spruce needles to detect early stages of larval feeding.
• Enhancing habitat biodiversity to encourage natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and birds.
• Mechanical control by removing and destroying infested branches in smaller or ornamental plantings.
• Application of chemical insecticides when larvae are in their early stages of development to minimize population impact on the host.
