The Spruce root aphid (Pachypappella piceae) belongs to the family Aphididae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is characterized by its cryptic lifestyle, primarily inhabiting the root systems and root collars of spruce trees, often hidden by soil or bark crevices.
The primary hosts for this aphid are species of the genus Picea. Unlike foliage-feeding aphids, this species remains below ground or at the base of the trunk for much of its life cycle, secreting a white, cottony wax that protects the colony from environmental factors and predators.
The biological development involves a complex cycle where dormant stages survive the winter either in the soil or protected under bark scales.
