The Pacific crayfish (Pacifastacus) belongs to the order Decapoda and the family Astacidae. In an agricultural and aquaculture context, this genus is recognized as a significant invasive pest that poses severe threats to irrigation infrastructure, commercial ponds, and local aquatic biodiversity.

These organisms are known to damage agricultural systems, specifically rice paddies and water management structures. By foraging on aquatic vegetation and burrowing into embankments, they disrupt the stability of irrigation systems, which leads to water loss and increased maintenance costs for farmers.

The biology of the genus is characterized by high reproductive rates and aggressive territorial behavior. Their life cycle involves an autumn breeding period, external egg incubation, and rapid maturation. This reproductive strategy allows the species to displace native fauna and rapidly colonize new habitats.

The damage caused is twofold: mechanical destruction of levees due to burrowing activities and biological impact as a vector for the crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci). This fungus is devastating to native crayfish populations, causing widespread ecological imbalance in agricultural water reservoirs.

Key methods include the intensive use of trapping devices, seasonal pond drainage to expose burrows, and the installation of filtration screens at water inlets.
