The signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) belongs to the order Decapoda and the family Astacidae. Originally native to North America, it has become one of the most widespread invasive species globally. Due to its aggressive nature and ability to tolerate diverse environmental conditions, it poses a significant threat to local biodiversity and aquatic infrastructure in many regions.

From an agricultural standpoint, the signal crayfish causes damage to irrigation networks and drainage channels. By constructing extensive burrowing systems in banks, they contribute to soil erosion and the structural failure of dams and canals. This instability leads to leakage and requires costly maintenance to ensure a continuous water supply for farming fields and orchards.

The biology of the species supports its rapid expansion. Females carry eggs throughout the winter, and larvae emerge in the spring with a high survival rate. They reach sexual maturity within two to three years, allowing for swift population growth. Their ability to migrate both in water and occasionally across land allows them to colonize new irrigation basins quickly.

Damage caused by this species includes the destruction of aquatic vegetation and competition with native crayfish species, often leading to their local extinction. Furthermore, the signal crayfish acts as a vector for crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci), which devastates populations of indigenous crayfish species that are crucial for the health of freshwater ecosystems near farmland.

Control measures primarily involve aggressive trapping programs and physical barriers to prevent further migration into critical irrigation systems. Strict regulations on the movement of live crayfish are essential to prevent the spread to new waterways. In some instances, specialized chemical treatments may be considered in isolated, closed systems, though habitat modification and regular monitoring remain the most practical solutions for ongoing management.
