Palaeochrysophanus

Systematic position. Palaeochrysophanus belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Lycaenidae. While often appreciated as butterflies in their adult form, the larval stage (caterpillar) acts as a phytophagous pest that can feed on the foliage of specific botanical families, occasionally impacting crops.

Host plants and damage. The larvae primarily feed on plants within the Polygonaceae family. Damage typically manifests as irregular holes in the leaves or severe skeletonization, where the leaf blades are consumed down to the veins. This herbivory reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to stunted growth and potential yield loss if the infestation is severe.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are usually deposited on the undersides of leaves of host plants. Larvae are generally nocturnal or crepuscular, hiding during the day to avoid predators. The overwintering stage varies but often occurs as a pupa protected in plant debris or soil crevices.

Economic importance. While not always classified as a primary agricultural pest in large-scale farming, Palaeochrysophanus can become a nuisance in localized areas. In favorable weather conditions, populations can surge, causing visible damage to host plants and necessitating intervention to prevent further spread into surrounding vegetation.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. Recommended strategies include:

• Routine scouting and manual removal of caterpillars in small gardens.
• Encouraging natural enemies such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles.
• Applying bio-insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stages.
• Removing weed hosts that support the pest population outside of the main growing season.
