Description

The Spring cankerworm (Paleacrita vernata) is a member of the Geometridae family within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is a significant defoliator, known for its ability to cause severe damage to various tree species, particularly during the early stages of the growing season.

Its host range is quite broad, including common orchard crops like apple, pear, and various stone fruits, as well as several shade and ornamental trees. The presence of the pest is often noticed too late, as the larvae feed rapidly on tender plant tissues during the initial flush of growth.

The life cycle involves a single generation per year. The insect overwinters as pupae in the soil. Early in the spring, flightless females emerge from the ground, crawl up the trunks of trees, and lay eggs on twigs and in bark crevices. The larvae hatch in synchronization with the opening of buds.
