The depressed flour beetle (genus Palorus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Tenebrionidae. These beetles are notorious pests that primarily infest stored agricultural commodities, processed food products, and industrial milling facilities, causing significant economic losses.

They infest a wide range of commodities, including wheat, barley, corn, flour, semolina, bran, oilseeds, and dried fruits. Due to their flattened body shape, they can easily exploit narrow crevices and cracks in storage equipment or penetrate poorly sealed packaging, gaining access to stored food.

The biology of Palorus species is characterized by their ability to thrive in stable storage environments. Females deposit eggs in dust or debris associated with grain and flour. The larvae go through several developmental stages before pupating, and the duration of their life cycle is highly influenced by temperature and moisture levels within the storage facility.

The damage caused by these beetles involves both the consumption of raw materials and the contamination of products. Their presence causes the spoilage of grain, often leading to increased heat and moisture in the stored bulk, which subsequently promotes the growth of fungi and mold, rendering the stored items unsuitable for consumption.
