Depressed flour beetle

The Depressed flour beetle (Latin: Palorus depressus) is a small but destructive pest belonging to the Tenebrionidae family. Measuring only about 2.5–3 mm in length, its flattened body structure is perfectly adapted for surviving in the narrow crevices and interstices common in grain storage facilities, milling machinery, and processing equipment.

This species primarily infests a wide range of stored products, including various cereals, flour, bran, processed grains, and even oilseeds. It is particularly notorious in flour mills, where it can accumulate in hidden areas, making it extremely difficult to eradicate without specialized sanitation and pest control protocols.

The biological life cycle of Palorus depressus is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Females lay their eggs directly into the food source, allowing larvae to begin feeding immediately upon hatching. Under optimal warehouse conditions (around 25°C and moderate humidity), the beetle can complete its life cycle in just over a month, leading to multiple overlapping generations throughout the year.

The damage caused by the depressed flour beetle includes the loss of product mass and quality. Larvae and adults feed on the endosperm of grains and reduce the market value of flour by contaminating it with cast skins, fecal pellets, and secretions. This contamination can render the product unfit for human or animal consumption due to health risks and quality degradation.

Management strategies focus on a combination of physical and chemical preventive measures:

• Implementing strict sanitation programs to remove dust and spilled grain residues.
• Applying residual insecticides on structural surfaces of storage buildings.
• Monitoring grain moisture levels to discourage pest establishment.
• Utilizing fumigation methods in cases of severe infestation to penetrate deep into storage areas.
