Depressed flour beetle

Palorus ratzeburgi

Description

The depressed flour beetle (Palorus ratzeburgi) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Tenebrionidae family. It is a cosmopolitan stored-product pest known for its ability to infest various types of processed grains, flour, and cereals, particularly in mills, grain elevators, and warehouses where sanitation levels are suboptimal.

This pest primarily infests flour, bran, meal, and various cereal products. It is frequently found in wheat, rye, and oat stores. Due to their small size and flattened body structure, these insects can inhabit small crevices and gaps in milling machinery and storage containers, making them difficult to detect and eradicate completely.

The biology of the species is marked by high reproductive efficiency in warm, enclosed environments. The life cycle comprises egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adults are tiny (approx. 2.5–3 mm) and reddish-brown. They thrive in environments with low ventilation, where they can continue their development cycle throughout the year if temperatures remain within a favorable range.

Damage caused by the depressed flour beetle is significant for the food industry. Larvae and adults feed on the endosperm and germ of kernels, which significantly reduces the nutritional value and germination potential of seeds. Furthermore, their waste products, including frass and molted skins, contaminate the food, promoting moisture buildup and mold growth within the grain mass.

Protection and control measures focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to maintain product safety:

  • Routine cleaning of all grain-handling equipment to remove dust and debris.
  • Use of fumigation or contact insecticides in empty storage facilities.
  • Temperature management to keep grain cool, inhibiting insect reproduction.
  • Implementation of regular inspections and pheromone monitoring.
  • Sealing cracks in infrastructure to minimize hidden breeding sites.
