Depressed flour beetle

The depressed flour beetle (Palorus subdepressus) is a significant stored-product pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Tenebrionidae. Due to its small, flattened body, this beetle can easily penetrate narrow gaps and cracks in storage facilities, silos, and processing machinery, making it difficult to detect and eradicate.

This pest infests a wide variety of commodities, including stored grains, wheat flour, cereal products, bran, oilseeds, and processed feed. It is particularly attracted to warehouses where hygiene standards are poorly maintained and where spilled grain or dust creates a steady food source for developing larvae.

The biology of the depressed flour beetle is heavily influenced by environmental conditions. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions with warm temperatures and high humidity, the insect breeds rapidly, producing multiple generations throughout the year. The larvae are highly resilient and capable of thriving in compact storage environments.

Damage caused by this beetle includes the consumption of grain components and the contamination of the remaining product with frass and cast skins. By feeding on the germ of the grain, they compromise seed germination and reduce the nutritional value of the grain. Furthermore, their presence promotes mold growth, leading to additional spoilage and heating of the grain mass.
