Web-spinning sawflies

Pamphilius is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Pamphiliidae, commonly known as web-spinning sawflies. Unlike many other sawfly species, the larvae of these insects construct elaborate webs or rolled-leaf shelters where they feed, providing them with protection from predators and environmental factors.

These pests primarily target fruit trees, including stone fruits such as plums, cherries, and peaches, as well as various ornamental trees. The larvae are voracious feeders, capable of stripping foliage rapidly, which can be particularly damaging to young nursery stock or newly planted orchard trees.

The life cycle typically includes one generation per year. The insects overwinter as mature larvae in soil cells at a shallow depth. In the spring, they pupate and emerge as adults. After mating, females lay eggs on the leaves of host plants, where the larvae begin their development cycle by spinning their characteristic shelters.

The primary damage caused by Pamphilius larvae involves the skeletonization or total consumption of leaves. By rolling and webbing leaves together, the larvae create localized damage zones that expand as the larvae grow. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, affecting tree vigor and fruit development.
