Web-spinning sawfly

The web-spinning sawfly (Pamphilius dentatus) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Pamphiliidae family within the Hymenoptera order. Known for their unique behavior, these insects are named after the characteristic leaf-rolling and web-building activities performed by their larvae on various deciduous trees and shrubs.

This species primarily targets plants of the Rosaceae family, including apple, pear, and plum trees. While adults cause minimal damage, the larval stage is highly destructive, actively feeding on leaf tissues. Their presence is easily identified by the silk webs spun between leaves, which act as a protective barrier against environmental factors and predators.

The life cycle of this sawfly is typically univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the soil, usually at a depth of several centimeters. Upon emerging in spring, the adults mate and deposit eggs on the foliage. The newly hatched larvae immediately begin constructing their characteristic web shelters, where they feed throughout their developmental stages.

In terms of agricultural impact, the damage caused by Pamphilius dentatus can be severe. Larvae skeletonize the leaves, eventually consuming the entire leaf blade. Widespread infestation leads to defoliation, which impairs photosynthesis, reduces the tree's vigor, and can cause a significant decline in fruit production and overall tree longevity.
