Description

The peach web-spinning sawfly (Pamphilius persicum) is a member of the Pamphiliidae family within the order Hymenoptera. It is a recognized pest in orchards that specifically targets stone fruit trees, causing localized damage that can escalate if left unmanaged.

The primary hosts for this pest include peach trees (Prunus persica) and almond trees. The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which possess chewing mouthparts designed to consume leaf tissue efficiently, often leading to partial or complete defoliation of the infested branches.

The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the soil within earthen cells at a depth that protects them from winter frost. As spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs, typically on the underside of leaves near the main veins.

The most distinctive damage symptom is the construction of webbed leaf rolls or 'cigars' created by the larvae using silk produced by their glands. Within these protective structures, the larvae feed on the leaf blade, avoiding the thicker veins initially, which creates a 'skeletonized' appearance before the entire leaf is consumed.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Cultural practices such as autumn tillage in the orchard floor significantly reduce the survival rate of overwintering larvae. If chemical intervention is necessary, application should be timed with the larval hatching stage to ensure maximum efficacy of the insecticide.
