Description
The rose web-spinning sawfly (Pamphilius stramineipes) is a member of the Pamphiliidae family within the Hymenoptera order. It is a specialized pest that exclusively targets rose bushes, creating significant challenges for gardeners and ornamental plant nurseries.
The biological cycle of this insect is univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. The larvae overwinter in the soil inside small earthen cells. Pupation takes place in early spring, and adults emerge just as the rose foliage begins to unfurl, allowing them to deposit eggs immediately.
After hatching, the larvae utilize silk to bind leaves together, creating tubular structures or tightly rolled nests. These structures serve as both a shelter and a food source. The larvae remain hidden within these webs while feeding on the leaf tissue, which makes them difficult to target.
Damage caused by this pest is primarily cosmetic but can become severe if left unmanaged. Symptoms include characteristic rolled-up leaves, which are webbed together and partially skeletonized. Intense infestations can cause premature leaf drop and negatively affect the overall vigor of the rose bush.
Integrated pest management is recommended for control. Hand-picking and destroying infested leaves early in the season can significantly reduce the population. In severe cases, systemic insecticides applied shortly after egg hatching can be effective, provided they are used according to safety guidelines.
