Panagrellus

Panagrellus is a genus of free-living nematodes belonging to the family Panagrolaimidae. While they are often associated with the decomposition of organic matter, in certain agricultural environments, they act as pests that threaten crop integrity. These microscopic worms thrive in moist, nutrient-rich soils, often concentrating near the roots of young seedlings.

Systematically classified within the order Rhabditida, these nematodes exhibit a highly efficient reproductive strategy. Their life cycle is remarkably short, allowing for rapid population explosions under conditions of high humidity and organic enrichment. This quick succession of generations makes them difficult to eradicate once they have established themselves in a growing medium.

Agricultural crops, especially those in greenhouse environments, are most susceptible to damage from Panagrellus. They tend to target decaying organic matter but can easily shift to feeding on living plant tissues when populations become dense. This often results in the damage of tender roots, which significantly impairs the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals.

The damage caused by these nematodes is often characterized by stunted growth, chlorosis, and general systemic weakness. The pest creates entry points in root structures, which invites secondary infections by pathogenic fungi and bacteria. Consequently, the primary damage caused by the nematodes is frequently exacerbated by rapid tissue rot, leading to plant death.

Effective management and control of Panagrellus require a focus on environmental hygiene and preventive care:

• Implement steam or chemical sterilization of soil in greenhouses.
• Regularly remove decaying plant residues to limit food sources.
• Ensure proper soil aeration and drainage to reduce moisture saturation.
• Incorporate predatory organisms or bio-nematicides into the integrated pest management program.
