Description
Systematic position. Panchaetothrips noxius is a member of the order Thysanoptera, family Panchaetothripinae. This insect is a significant agricultural pest known for its specialized feeding habits and its ability to cause severe damage to various field crops by colonizing the foliage of host plants.
Affected crops. The pest primarily targets plants within the Amaranthaceae family, with sugar beets being a primary host. It can also infest various other economic crops and wild weed species, which often serve as alternative hosts during the early stages of the growing season or in regions with diverse vegetation.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. The insect thrives in warm and relatively dry environmental conditions.
