Description
Systematic position. The pest Pangaeus docilis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cydnidae (burrower bugs). In agronomic practice, this species is classified as a soil-dwelling pest that often evades detection due to its cryptic lifestyle beneath the soil surface.
Affected crops. This bug primarily causes damage to cereal crops, including corn, sorghum, and wheat. Damage has also been documented on vegetable crops and various grasses, where the pest feeds on the subterranean parts of the plants during the early stages of their development.
Biology and life cycle. Adults and nymphs of Pangaeus docilis live within the soil, which complicates population monitoring. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The pest prefers areas with sufficient soil moisture, moving through the soil to locate host plants and piercing their roots and underground stems for nourishment.
