Burrowing bug

Pangaeus uhleri, commonly known as a burrowing bug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cydnidae. These insects are distinguished by their flattened, oval-shaped bodies that are adapted for moving through soil and leaf litter. Their dark color and specialized legs allow them to navigate efficiently beneath the soil surface, making them difficult to detect.

The host range of this pest is quite diverse, with significant impacts observed in crops such as peanuts, corn, and various cereal grains. By inhabiting the root zone, these bugs primarily target the underground stems and developing roots, causing cumulative stress on the plant which manifests during the early stages of growth.

The life cycle of the burrowing bug consists of egg, nymphal stages, and the adult phase. These insects prefer soils with high moisture content and organic matter, where they spend most of their existence. Adults overwinter in protected soil habitats and emerge during the spring to locate suitable host plants for reproduction and feeding.

The economic damage caused by Pangaeus uhleri involves direct sap-feeding, which stunts plant growth and reduces overall crop vigor. In addition to sap depletion, the injury sites serve as entry points for secondary soil-borne pathogens. This leads to root lesions and potential plant death, often resulting in uneven and sparse crop stands in the field.
