Description
Systematic position: The common scorpionfly (Panorpa communis) belongs to the order Mecoptera and the family Panorpidae. They are easily identified by the male's upturned abdomen, which resembles a scorpion's stinger, although it is entirely harmless to humans and vertebrates.
Host plants: Scorpionflies are primarily found in moist, shaded environments, including orchards and vegetable gardens. They are known to feed on nectar, honeydew, and occasionally on damaged or decaying fruit of berry bushes and fruit trees, exploiting existing wounds on the surface of the plant tissue.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis consisting of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in moist soil or decaying organic matter. Larvae inhabit the surface layer of the soil, feeding on dead organic material, and sometimes on weakened live plant tissues, eventually pupating in the ground.
