Description

The common scorpionfly Panorpa communis belongs to the order Mecoptera and the family Panorpidae. This insect is easily identified by the unique bulbous genital structure at the tip of the male's abdomen, which resembles a scorpion's stinger; however, it is entirely harmless to humans and lacks any venom.

In an agricultural context, the common scorpionfly is not considered a major primary pest. It primarily functions as a scavenger, feeding on dead insects, decaying organic matter, and overripe fruits. However, under high population densities or dry conditions, they can cause secondary damage to agricultural crops by feeding on soft tissues.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae typically develop in soil or moist organic debris, feeding on decomposing material. Adults are most active during the summer months in humid, shaded environments such as hedgerows, forest edges, and orchards.

The damage is characterized by surface feeding on fruits, berries, and soft plant tissues. This feeding not only causes aesthetic damage but also creates entry points for various fungal pathogens and bacterial rots, which can lead to significant post-harvest losses and reduced shelf life of the affected fruits.

Direct chemical control against scorpionflies is rarely warranted or recommended. Instead, integrated management focuses on cultural practices:

  • keeping the garden floor free of rotting fruit;
  • maintaining good air circulation within fruit plantings;
  • managing high humidity levels in dense vegetation;
  • regular monitoring to ensure their populations remain low.
