Unlike traditional agricultural pests that consume vegetation, this insect is categorized as a nuisance and a severe health hazard in rural and agricultural settings. It is well-known for its role as a primary vector for the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease.

The habitat of this species typically includes forest areas and shrublands, but it frequently invades human-made structures, including barns, stables, and housing for livestock. Because it prefers protected, dark environments, it often establishes colonies in the structural cracks of buildings, which are common in agricultural zones with older wooden or masonry facilities.

The life cycle of Panstrongylus megistus consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and an adult stage. Each stage requires a blood meal to progress to the next. The development duration is highly sensitive to ambient temperature and humidity. These insects are nocturnal, spending their days in cracks and crevices, which makes their presence often go unnoticed until a large infestation is established.
