Description

Systematic position. Parachronistis albiceps is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae (twirler moths). As an agricultural pest, it is specifically adapted to feed on the tissues of various species of the Corylus genus, making it a serious threat to commercial hazelnut plantations.

Affected crops and damage. The primary host is the hazelnut tree (Corylus avellana). The larvae are internal feeders, attacking buds and developing foliage. This feeding behavior causes bud blast, stunted growth of shoots, and a significant reduction in the annual nut harvest, posing a threat to the economic viability of orchards.

Biology and life cycle. The species typically overwinters as young larvae within protective cocoons located in bark crevices or near bud scales. As temperatures rise in the spring, the larvae become active and bore directly into the swelling buds. After pupation in the late spring or early summer, adult moths emerge, mate, and deposit eggs on the host plant to begin the cycle for the next season.

Signs of infestation. The most common sign of Parachronistis albiceps is the presence of webbed clusters of young leaves. Inside these webbed shelters, the larvae feed on the tender tissues, causing leaves to curl, yellow, and dry out. Severe infestations lead to the loss of leaf surface area, which hinders photosynthesis and reduces tree vigor.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this moth:

  • Applying approved insecticides during the bud-burst stage when larvae are most vulnerable.
  • Pruning and removing infested shoots to disrupt the life cycle of the moth.
  • Using pheromone traps to monitor adult flight and optimize the timing of pesticide applications.
  • Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids within the orchard ecosystem to maintain ecological balance.
