New Zealand flatworm

Parakontikia ventrolineata, commonly referred to as the New Zealand flatworm, is a species of flatworm in the family Geoplanidae. It is considered an invasive pest in many temperate regions, having originated from the Southern Hemisphere and spread globally through the trade of horticultural plants and nursery stock.

The primary ecological impact of this organism is the predation of earthworms. By preying on these beneficial soil creatures, the flatworm disrupts the vital processes of soil aeration, nutrient cycling, and water infiltration, which are essential for the healthy development of roots in various ornamental and agricultural crops.

Regarding its biology, the flatworm is a nocturnal predator that thrives in damp, humid conditions. It is a hermaphrodite, and reproduction involves laying small, dark-colored cocoons that are highly resistant to environmental stress. These cocoons allow the species to colonize new areas effectively when soil or plants are transported.

Damage to plants is indirect but significant. When earthworm populations collapse due to heavy predation, the soil structure becomes compacted and poorly drained. This lack of biological activity leads to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms in plants, and an overall decline in the productive capacity of garden beds and vegetable patches.

Management and control strategies focus on limiting the spread and physically removing the pest:

• Strict inspection of all imported plants, pots, and soil for signs of adult worms or their egg cocoons.
• Removing debris, planks, stones, and leaf litter from garden areas to eliminate daytime hiding spots.
• Manual removal and destruction of observed specimens, typically by placing them in salt water or vinegar.
• Maintaining well-drained and less humid areas where possible to discourage the pest's activity.
