Description

Parallelomma albipes is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Scathophagidae. This fly species is well-known for its specific preference for Allium crops, making it a serious concern for onion and garlic growers throughout its geographic range in Europe and parts of Asia.

The primary hosts of this pest include bulb onions, leeks, and garlic. The damage is primarily caused by the larval stage of the fly. These larvae are leaf miners, meaning they tunnel into the interior of the foliage, consuming the internal tissues and leaving external layers intact, which makes them difficult to target with contact pesticides.

The biological cycle of this insect is closely linked to the early growing season. Adult flies emerge in spring to lay eggs on the leaves of young host plants. The larvae hatch and immediately bore into the tissue. After several weeks of feeding, the mature larvae exit the plants and drop into the soil to pupate, where they remain until the next season.

The damage caused by Parallelomma albipes results in distorted growth, chlorosis, and widespread wilting of the leaves. Severe infestations can completely destroy young plants and significantly reduce the size and quality of the bulbs. The miner damage also creates entry points for various bacterial and fungal pathogens, further complicating the crop health.
