Paraplonobia

Paraplonobia is a genus of plant-feeding mites belonging to the family Tetranychidae within the order Trombidiformes. These microscopic pests are often overlooked during the initial stages of infestation, yet they possess the potential to cause severe economic losses in both commercial agriculture and horticultural settings.

This genus is known for its polyphagous nature, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant species. Paraplonobia is frequently documented on cereal crops, legumes, various fruit trees, and several vegetable crops grown in both open fields and greenhouses. Infestations typically surge under specific environmental conditions, particularly hot and dry periods that accelerate their life cycle.

The life cycle of Paraplonobia consists of several developmental stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly onto the surface of leaves or within plant crevices. The rapid rate of generation turnover allows populations to reach damaging levels very quickly, particularly when environmental stressors weaken the host plants.

The damage is characterized by chlorotic spots appearing on the leaves, which eventually coalesce, leading to premature yellowing, withering, and necrosis. By extracting cell contents, these mites disrupt photosynthesis, weaken the plant's physiological structure, and significantly degrade the quality and yield of the harvest.
