Description

Parasemia (Parasemia plantaginis), commonly referred to as the wood tiger moth, belongs to the family Erebidae within the order Lepidoptera. While often appreciated for its coloration, this species is recognized in agronomy as a potential pest due to its polyphagous feeding habits on diverse plant species.

The larvae of this moth exhibit a wide host range, feeding primarily on various herbaceous plants. Crops such as clover, alfalfa, and other legumes are susceptible to feeding damage. They are also known to thrive on common weeds, which may serve as a reservoir for the population before they migrate to cultivated field crops.

The life cycle follows a standard pattern of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The insect typically overwinters in the larval stage, hiding within soil debris or leaf litter. Upon the arrival of favorable spring temperatures, the caterpillars emerge to feed, eventually forming silk cocoons mixed with their own hair to pupate before emerging as adult moths.
