Description

Parastenolechia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Gelechiidae (twirler moths). These small insects are known as specialized pests that can cause significant damage to orchards, primarily targeting stone fruit species in specific geographic zones where their populations are well-established.

The primary hosts for this pest include stone fruits such as peaches, plums, and almonds. The larvae are particularly destructive during the early spring months, as they prefer to feed on developing buds and young, succulent shoots, often leading to irreversible damage to the tree's growth points.

The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Overwintering typically occurs as larvae or pupae tucked into cracks in the bark or sheltered plant debris. Once temperatures rise and bud break begins, the larvae emerge to penetrate the buds, effectively hollowing them out from within.

The damage caused by Parastenolechia is characterized by the wilting and drying of the terminal shoots and the destruction of flower buds.
