The Black-spotted moth (scientific name Parastenolechia nigrinotella) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This species is found in temperate regions where it primarily infests trees belonging to the Rosaceae family.
Its primary hosts are fruit-bearing trees, specifically those within the Prunus genus, such as cherries, sweet cherries, and plums. The larvae of this moth pose a significant threat by damaging young buds and new shoots, which disrupts the normal vegetative growth of the host plant.
The life cycle of the pest involves a complete metamorphosis. It typically overwinters in the larval or pupal stage in protected areas such as bark crevices or plant debris. In the spring, coinciding with the start of the sap flow, larvae emerge and bore into buds and young shoots to feed before reaching the pupation stage.
The damage caused by this pest is characterized by the wilting and subsequent necrosis of shoot tips, giving the tree a scorched appearance. Gummosis is often observed at the entry points of the larvae. Heavy infestations can lead to crown deformation and a substantial reduction in fruit yield across affected orchards.
Management strategies incorporate a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Crucial steps include the timely pruning and destruction of infested shoots where larvae congregate. During the growing season, if the pest population exceeds the economic threshold, the application of systemic or contact-stomach insecticides is recommended, provided that pre-harvest intervals are strictly followed.
