Common wasp

Systematic position: The common wasp (Paravespula vulgaris) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Vespidae. These social insects are highly organized, with a complex colony structure consisting of a queen, workers, and drones. Understanding their social hierarchy is essential for effective pest management in agricultural landscapes.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins in spring when a queen emerges from hibernation to establish a new nest. Throughout the summer, the worker population expands significantly. By late summer and early autumn, the colony is at its peak strength, which coincides with the maturation of many fruit crops, leading to increased interaction between wasps and human-managed crops.

Damaged crops: Paravespula species are significant pests for vineyards and commercial orchards. They are particularly drawn to crops such as grapes, pears, apples, plums, and peaches. As the sugar levels in the fruits increase during the ripening process, the attractiveness of the orchards to wasps grows, often leading to severe infestations.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: Wasps cause direct economic losses by feeding on the flesh of ripe fruits, leaving behind damaged, hollowed-out skins. This damage often acts as a gateway for secondary fungal infections and bacterial decay. Furthermore, their presence poses a significant safety concern for agricultural workers during the harvest period due to the risk of aggressive stinging.

Protection measures: Managing wasp populations requires a strategic combination of cultural and physical control methods:

• Locating and removing nests located near or within the orchard boundaries.
• Deploying pheromone-free or selective bait traps to reduce the local worker population.
• Applying physical barriers, such as mesh netting, to protect high-value fruit crops.
• Ensuring proper sanitation by removing overripe or fallen fruit from the orchard floor to eliminate food sources.
