Strawberry rootworm

The strawberry rootworm (Paria canella) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is notorious for its dual threat: adults feed on foliage, while the larvae feed on the roots. Measuring only about 3 to 4 millimeters in length, these beetles often go unnoticed until significant damage to the host plant has already occurred.

The primary hosts of Paria canella include strawberries and various brambles like blackberries and raspberries. Occasionally, they can affect other Rosaceae plants in the landscape. Because they target both the vegetative parts and the root system, an infestation can rapidly debilitate a plant, resulting in stunted growth and drastically reduced berry yield.

The biological cycle of this pest involves egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults usually emerge in the spring, feeding on leaves and laying eggs in the soil near the base of the plant. The larvae emerge and descend into the soil, where they feed on the rootlets and crowns of the plants. After pupating in the soil, the new generation of adults emerges to continue the cycle.

The damage caused by Paria canella is twofold. Adults create small, shot-hole-like perforations in leaves, which can lead to premature leaf drop if the infestation is severe. Larval feeding is more insidious; by consuming root hairs and tunneling into the roots, they deprive the plant of water and nutrients, often leading to the wilting and eventual death of the strawberry plants.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Crop rotation to break the life cycle of the root-dwelling larvae.
• Maintaining clean cultivation by removing plant debris and weeds.
• Inspecting new planting stock to ensure it is free from larvae and pupae.
• Applying soil-applied insecticides or biological controls when larvae are active.
• Utilizing foliar sprays targeting adult beetles during their peak activity periods.
