Description

Strawberry rootworm (Paria fragariae) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Despite its common name, it is a significant pest that affects both the foliage of plants as adults and the root systems as larvae.

This pest primarily attacks strawberry plants, but it also has a wide host range. It can damage raspberries, blackberries, roses, and various nursery crops. Its ability to thrive on multiple species makes it a persistent challenge for commercial fruit growers and home gardeners alike.

The life cycle of the strawberry rootworm involves four stages. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as soil debris or under plant mulch. In the spring, they emerge to feed on leaves. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the plant base. Upon hatching, the larvae move downward to feed on the rootlets, which is the most destructive phase of their life cycle.

The damage caused by this insect is dual-faceted. Adults create small, irregular holes in the leaves, commonly referred to as "shotholing." Larvae cause stunted growth, wilting, and poor yields by pruning the root system. In cases of severe infestation, plants may become so weakened that they fail to produce fruit or die completely.

Managing the strawberry rootworm requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, keeping the planting area free of debris, and frequent cultivation help disrupt the lifecycle. Chemical control should be timed with the emergence of adult beetles before they start laying eggs, using authorized insecticides that target both the foliage and the soil zone.
