Strawberry rootworm

Paria variabilis, commonly known as a type of strawberry rootworm, is a beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae and the order Coleoptera. This pest is characterized by its significant color variation and ability to adapt to various environmental conditions. In agricultural settings, it is recognized as a persistent threat to both commercial fruit production and ornamental nurseries.

This beetle primarily affects plants in the Rosaceae family, with strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry being its most common hosts. Furthermore, the pest can inhabit numerous weed species, which often act as reservoirs. These weeds allow the population to persist and migrate into crops as soon as favorable conditions arise or during the early stages of plant development.

The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs in the soil or under debris as adults. Once temperatures rise, beetles emerge to feed on foliage. Eggs are subsequently deposited in the soil near the plant base. The larvae then descend to feed on the root system, often causing significant root pruning that remains hidden until the damage becomes severe.

The damage caused by Paria variabilis is twofold. Larval feeding on roots inhibits the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, and potential plant death in severe infestations. Adult beetles cause significant foliage damage by skeletonizing leaves or creating irregular "shot-holes," which reduce photosynthetic efficiency and overall plant vigor.

Management and control strategies include:

• Implementing crop rotation to break the life cycle of soil-dwelling larvae.
• Maintaining strict weed control around the perimeter of production fields.
• Utilizing cultural practices like cultivation to disrupt pupal cells in the soil.
• Applying targeted insecticides when adult emergence is detected through monitoring.
