Systematic position. The eucalyptus leaf beetle (Paropsisterna m-fuscum) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a specialized pest species that has co-evolved with various species within the Eucalyptus genus, making it a significant challenge for silviculture.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this beetle are trees belonging to the Eucalyptus genus. It is particularly damaging to young plantations, nursery stocks, and ornamental plantings, where the loss of foliage can significantly hinder the development and health of the host trees.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly onto the foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding voraciously on the leaves. The pupation phase typically occurs in the soil or leaf litter beneath the host tree, completing the life cycle.

Nature of damage. Both larvae and adult beetles cause extensive damage by feeding on eucalyptus leaves. They often consume the leaf tissue entirely, leaving only the main veins. Widespread infestation leads to severe defoliation, which stresses the tree, inhibits growth, and increases susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens and secondary pests.
