The petiole-mining moth (Parornix petiolella) belongs to the family Gracillariidae within the order Lepidoptera. This small moth is known for its larval stage, which develops inside the leaf tissues, creating specific mining patterns that disrupt the structural integrity and metabolic activity of the host plant.

The primary hosts for this pest include trees of the genus Malus, specifically apple orchards. While its distribution can be localized, the damage caused by this insect can be significant in poorly managed orchards, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity of the trees.
