This species primarily feeds on cereal crops, including wheat, barley, millet, and rice. Beyond cereal grains, the Spanish sparrow poses a severe threat to viticulture by feeding on ripening grapes and causes substantial losses in sunflower fields by excavating seeds directly from the flower heads.

The biology of this species is defined by its colonial breeding behavior, which allows for rapid population growth.
