Eurasian tree sparrow

The Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus) is a member of the Passeridae family. Unlike its urban counterpart, this species is highly adapted to rural environments, orchards, and agricultural landscapes. It is easily identified by its chestnut crown and distinct black cheek patches, which make it a highly recognizable bird in farming regions worldwide.

This bird is considered a significant agricultural pest, particularly during the ripening stages of various crops. It primarily damages wheat, barley, oats, millet, sorghum, and sunflower crops. Furthermore, they are known to raid orchards and vineyards, causing severe economic losses to fruit production by pecking at the maturing crops.

The biology of the tree sparrow is characterized by high reproductive rates and social nesting behavior. These birds typically raise two to three broods per season, nesting in colonies within tree hollows, birdhouses, or building crevices. Post-breeding, they form large flocks that move across agricultural areas, leading to concentrated feeding pressure on specific field locations.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical: sparrows strip grain directly from the ears or seed heads. By pecking at the grain, they cause it to shatter, resulting in significant yield reduction. In high-density areas, the continuous feeding by large flocks throughout the day can strip the perimeter of a grain field almost entirely, leaving stalks bare and reducing harvest efficiency.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies to deter flocks without harming the local ecosystem:

• Deployment of acoustic bird scarers that play distress calls.
• Use of visual deterrents like scarecrows, raptor silhouettes, and reflective tape.
• Implementation of agricultural netting for small-scale high-value crops.
• Optimizing harvest timing to minimize the period of crop vulnerability.
• Management of nesting sites near agricultural perimeters to reduce local population density.
