Pauropsylla

Pauropsylla is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, family Triozidae (psyllids). These minute sap-sucking pests are widely recognized in agricultural and botanical circles for their unique ability to induce the formation of specific growths, known as galls, on the leaves of their host plants.

This pest is primarily considered a significant threat to members of the Moraceae family, particularly various species of Ficus. In tropical and subtropical regions, species of the Pauropsylla genus can cause severe damage to ornamental plantings, landscape trees, and forestry crops, ultimately reducing their physiological vigor and aesthetic value.

The biology of these insects is intricately linked to the developmental stages of the host plant. Female insects lay their eggs directly into the tissues of young, developing leaves. Upon hatching, the nymphs begin to feed on plant sap, releasing specific enzymes that trigger abnormal cell division in the plant, forming galls that provide the larvae with a protected environment against predators and climate.

The damage is characterized by the presence of numerous protruding galls on the leaf surface, leading to severe leaf distortion, impaired photosynthesis, and premature leaf drop. When pest populations are high, the host plant becomes significantly weakened, growth is stunted, and in severe or prolonged infestations, the plant may die due to the depletion of its nutrient reserves.

Control measures require an integrated management approach. Early detection through regular monitoring is crucial, followed by the immediate removal and destruction of infested foliage. Systemic insecticides are generally effective as they travel through the plant's vascular system to reach the feeding larvae inside the galls. Proactive applications during the peak flushing season help to suppress the initial generation of the pest.
