Ude's psyllid

Ude's psyllid (Pauropsylla udei) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae (jumping plant lice). These insects are known for their intricate relationship with host plants, where they function as gall-formers, significantly altering the morphology of the plant tissues they infest.

The insect primarily affects specific tree species within its ecological range. By targeting these plants, it ensures a stable food supply for its offspring. While not a broad-spectrum pest, its presence on susceptible host plants can be persistent, leading to cumulative damage over several growing seasons if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of Pauropsylla udei is intrinsically linked to its host. Adults lay eggs on young foliage, and upon hatching, the nymphs secrete chemical substances that trigger the plant to develop abnormal growths known as galls. These galls provide the nymphs with a controlled, nutrient-rich environment and protection from predators and environmental stress.

The galls disrupt nutrient translocation and photosynthetic capacity, which leads to leaf deformation and premature senescence. Managing populations of Ude's psyllid requires a combination of vigilance and targeted action:
