Pink bollworm

Taxonomic classification: The pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Gelechiidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive agricultural pests affecting cotton production worldwide due to its specialized feeding habits and rapid reproduction.

Host plants: The primary host of this pest is the cotton plant (Gossypium). However, it is also known to infest other malvaceous plants, including okra (Abelmoschus esculentus), hibiscus, and various wild species within the Malvaceae family, which support its survival between cotton seasons.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult moths are nocturnal and inconspicuous. Females lay eggs on cotton squares or bolls. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the fruit to feed on developing seeds. The lifecycle can repeat several times within a single growing season, often causing overlapping generations that are difficult to control.

Damage and impact: Larval feeding directly destroys cotton seeds and damages the lint fibers. This significantly reduces both yield and quality of the raw cotton. Furthermore, the entry holes created by the larvae allow secondary pathogens such as bacteria and fungi to enter, leading to boll rot and staining of the lint, which drastically lowers the market value.

Management strategies: Controlling the pink bollworm requires a multi-faceted IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach:

• Implementation of a mandatory host-free period to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Utilization of pheromone traps for early detection and mating disruption.
• Prompt destruction of cotton stalks and ginning waste after harvesting.
• Application of selective insecticides during the peak oviposition period.
• Introduction of biological control agents and resistant cotton varieties.
