Description
The edible frog (Pelophylax esculentus) belongs to the order Anura, family Ranidae. It is a widespread hybrid species that often colonizes irrigation systems, drainage ditches, and wet fields, making it a common presence in various agricultural environments across Europe.
While this amphibian is not a herbivore, it acts as a physical disturbance factor in intensive farming. During peak activity, particularly in early spring, large numbers of these frogs can cause significant mechanical damage to sensitive seedlings and newly planted vegetables through trampling and burrowing in soft, waterlogged soils.
The biological cycle of the edible frog is heavily dependent on water. Eggs are laid in stagnant water bodies where tadpoles undergo development before metamorphosis. In an agricultural context, irrigation ponds and neglected drainage channels provide optimal conditions for rapid population growth, which may lead to water quality degradation that affects plant health.
The potential for damage is primarily indirect. In addition to direct trampling of sprouts, their presence often attracts predators, such as birds or snakes, to the field. These predators frequently damage crops while hunting for amphibians, leading to broken stems and disturbed root zones, which reduces overall crop yield.
Effective management strategies focus on habitat modification and exclusion techniques to protect vulnerable crops.
