Pemphredon

Systematic position: Pemphredon is a genus of wasps belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Crabronidae (digger wasps). While they are predatory insects that help control aphid populations, their nesting habits often lead to mechanical damage in woody plants, categorizing them as pests in orchard and ornamental settings.

Affected crops: These wasps primarily target fruit trees and berry bushes, including apple, pear, cherry, plum, raspberries, and currants. They prefer to nest in soft pith stems or existing cavities, often choosing plants that have been previously weakened or pruned improperly, making them prone to infestation.

Biology and life cycle: During the summer months, female Pemphredon wasps excavate tunnels inside plant stems to create brood cells. They hunt aphids, paralyze them with their sting, and deposit them into the cells as a food source for their larvae. After laying an egg in each cell, the female seals it off. The larvae feed, mature, and undergo pupation within the stem before the cycle repeats or completes by the following season.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The damage caused by Pemphredon is primarily physical. By boring tunnels into healthy or semi-damaged wood, the wasps disrupt the vascular system of the shoots. This leads to twig dieback, branch weakening, and creates entry points for secondary infections such as fungi and bacteria. Repeated infestations can severely stunt the growth of young trees.

• Perform regular sanitation pruning to remove dead or dying wood that may attract nesting wasps.
• Immediately apply pruning sealer or specialized wound dressings to all cuts on woody plants.
• Implement effective aphid control measures to reduce the available prey and attractiveness of the site.
• Monitor young trees closely during the flight season of the wasps to prevent initial colonization.
• Maintain optimal plant health through proper fertilization to ensure rapid healing of damaged tissues.
