Pemphredon lugubris

Pemphredon lugubris, commonly known as a type of aphid-hunting wasp within the Crabronidae family, is a hymenopteran insect. While often recognized as a natural predator of aphids, it can pose a secondary threat to gardens and orchards when it utilizes weakened twigs and stems of woody plants to construct its nests.

The host plants for this species typically include various fruit trees, such as apple, pear, cherry, and plum. The wasps are attracted to trees that have existing wounds, pruning stubs, or naturally occurring pith cavities where they can easily burrow to create galleries for their offspring.

The biology and life cycle of this wasp are quite specialized. The female adult creates nests in wooden cavities, provisioning them with paralyzed aphids, which serve as the primary food source for the developing larvae. The life cycle transitions through egg, larval, and pupal stages, often overwintering inside the wood, which allows the larvae to survive harsh weather conditions.

The damage caused by Pemphredon lugubris is primarily structural. As larvae feed and develop, they create tunnels within the soft tissues of twigs and branches. This tunneling activity disrupts the tree's nutrient transport system, leads to branch dieback, and creates entry points for secondary fungal infections that can further compromise the health of the plant.
