Mango shoot caterpillar

The Mango shoot caterpillar (Penicillaria jocosatrix) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is widely recognized in tropical and subtropical regions as a significant pest affecting mango orchards. The insect is well-adapted to environments where mango trees are cultivated throughout the year.

This species predominantly targets plants of the Anacardiaceae family, with Mangifera indica being the primary host. The caterpillars demonstrate a strong preference for young, succulent plant tissues, such as newly flushed leaves, flower buds, and developing inflorescences. This host specificity makes it a primary concern for mango producers worldwide.

The biological cycle of Penicillaria jocosatrix consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female moth deposits eggs on the underside of leaves or on inflorescences. Once the larvae hatch, they begin feeding immediately. They are highly active and can move between shoots, causing substantial damage before they descend into the soil to pupate in a protective cocoon.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe during the flowering and flushing stages of the mango tree. By feeding on the inflorescences, the caterpillars disrupt the pollination process and destroy potential fruit set. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which severely stunts the tree's growth and reduces the overall yield and fruit quality.
