Pericallia
Pericallia
Description
Pericallia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae, which act as significant phytophages during their larval stage. Systematically, this genus falls under the order Lepidoptera and the subfamily Arctiinae (tiger moths). In agronomic practice, the caterpillars of this genus are considered polyphagous, capable of causing substantial damage to various agricultural and ornamental plant species.
This pest affects a wide range of plants, including fruit trees, berry bushes, and various vegetable crops. The larvae are characterized by high voracity, actively consuming leaf blades, which leads to significant defoliation. In cases of massive infestation, Pericallia can severely weaken plant immunity, making them susceptible to secondary infections, fungal diseases, and environmental stress.
The biology of Pericallia development is typical for many tiger moths: the life cycle includes egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the underside of leaves, often in clusters. The larval development goes through several instars, during which they feed actively. The pest most often overwinters in the pupal stage, protected by dense cocoons hidden in the soil or plant debris, ensuring high survival rates.
The damage is manifested through skeletonization or complete consumption of leaves, often leaving only the main veins behind. The harmfulness lies not only in the mechanical destruction of the photosynthetic surface but also in the physiological slowing of plant growth, which directly leads to reduced yields and lower product quality. In nurseries, the presence of these caterpillars can result in a total loss of commercial value for seedlings.
Control measures require an integrated approach combining agrotechnical, biological, and chemical methods:
- Regular monitoring of plantings and manual collection of caterpillars in small areas.
- Removal of plant residues and deep soil cultivation in the autumn to destroy overwintering pupae.
- Application of bio-insecticides based on bacteria, which are highly effective against young larvae.
- Usage of systemic and contact insecticides when the pest population exceeds the economic injury level.
