The castor hairy caterpillar (Pericallia ricini) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant hosts. Its diet includes castor, sunflower, banana, turmeric, ginger, citrus, and various legumes and leafy vegetables. Due to this extensive host range, the pest can maintain population levels throughout the year, switching between available green vegetation in the agricultural landscape.

The life cycle of Pericallia ricini consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars.
